Pediatrics is a special interest of our practice. Kids are too young to experience pain and they can heal so quickly if given the right treatment to follow. We see common complaints of back pain in middle school when students start toting around a heavy backpack. A backpack should not be more than 10% of a childs bodyweight and should be worn on both shoulders. We can screen for scoliosis which is good to do often between the ages of 10-14 when teenagers start growing quickly. "Growing pains" is a common explanation I hear from parents about the childs's pain. Usually in the exam, we find a physiological reason for the pain and have a treatment to expedite the recovery. In children, the skeletal structure grows faster the the soft tissue and muscle. Treatment usually includes stretching at home or before sports. Our sprint training summer classes are a good way for gangly kids who see a loss of balance in their growth spurt to get coordinated and perfect their running technique. Kids are so open minded that is is easy to change their running techniques to give them confidence to participate in sports at their most akward stages. |
